The Caroline County School Nutrition Department is happy to report that our menus have been “Certified” as compliant with the new USDA regulations. Under the HHFKA we were required to submit detailed nutritional information and to document our approach to meeting the new guidelines. This included the addition of whole grains, more fruits and vegetables as well as a reduction in calories and fats. We were one of the first Divisions to be certified in the State.
“Eat Smart…Learn Smart…Grow Smart”
The School Nutrition Department will be serving school meals that meet the tough new federal nutrition standards, ensuring that meals are healthy, well-balanced and provide students all the nutrition they need to succeed at school.
School Meals offer students milk, fruits, vegetables, proteins and grains. Our meals must meet strict limits for saturated fat and calorie limits. Every child is now required to have a serving of fruit or vegetable as part of their meal.
Under the HHFKA, school lunches must meet strict standards requiring:
- Age appropriate calorie limits
- Larger servings of vegetables and fruits
- A wider variety of vegetables including dark green and red/orange vegetables and legumes
- Fat-Free or 1% milk (implemented 2011)
- More whole grains
- And less sodium
School Meals are a great value and a huge convenience for busy families.
